Huawei ban delayed… again | TECH(feed)

Computerworld | Aug 20, 2019

In May, the Commerce Department issued a reprieve on the Huawei ban that was set to expire this week. Just as President Trump expressed interest in cutting all ties with the Chinese company, the Commerce Department issued yet another 90-day delay on a total Huawei ban. In this episode of TECH(feed), Juliet discusses what this delay means for U.S. companies and how they may continue to work with Huawei.

HEY EVERYONE WELCOME BACK TO TECH FEED I’M JULIET BEAUCHAMP. I KNOW IT’S BEEN A LITTLE SINCE YOU LAST SAW ME… BUT YES, I’M STILL TALKING ABOUT HUAWEI. THERE’S MORE ON THE HUAWEI BAN… STICK AROUND.

SO THE LAST TIME YOU SAW ME I WAS TALKING ABOUT HUAWEI’S POTENTIAL OPERATING SYSTEM SOLUTION SHOULD IT BE CUT OFF FROM USING ANDROID. HUAWEI THEN SHOWCASED THAT NEW OPERATING SYSTEM AT ITS DEVELOPER CONFERENCE. IT CAN POWER A LOT OF DEVICES, BUT IT DOESN’T SEEM LIKE IT’LL POWER SMARTPHONES--YET.

SO THAT NEW HUAWEI O-S IS GOING TO START OFF BY POWERING I-O-T DEVICES. BUT SHOULD GOOGLE BE FORCED TO PULL SUPPORT FROM ANDROID, HUAWEI MAY NEED TO DEPLOY ITS OPERATING SYSTEM IN SMARTPHONES. AND THAT BRINGS ME TO MY NEXT POINT: UPDATES ON THE HUAWEI BAN. AS IT IS, ONLY SOME U-S COMPANIES CAN WORK WITH HUAWEI TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR EXISTING DEVICES. AND THAT’S GOING TO GO ON FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER 90 DAYS AFTER THE U-S ISSUED ANOTHER DELAY ON A TOTAL BAN.

OVER THE WEEKEND, PRESIDENT TRUMP SAID HE WANTED TO CUT ALL TIES WITH HUAWEI. BUT SHORTLY THEREAFTER, COMMERCE SECRETARY WILBUR ROSS ANNOUNCED THIS GENERAL LICENSE EXTENSION. IT SEEMS PARTICULARLY AIMED AT RURAL TELECOM COMPANIES THAT MAY NEED MORE TIME TO REPLACE HUAWEI EQUIPMENT FROM THEIR NETWORKS. BUT IT ALSO CAN APPLY TO GOOGLE, SINCE THE COMPANY WANTS TO CONTINUE SENDING OUT ANDROID SECURITY UPDATES TO EXISTING HUAWEI HANDSETS. AND IT DOES SEEMS AS THOUGH EXISTING HUAWEI DEVICES LIKE THE P20 AND P30 WILL HAVE ANDROID Q ONCE THAT ROLLS OUT.

STILL, THE FUTURE OF THE HUAWEI BAN IS UNCLEAR. ONCE THIS REPRIEVE EXPIRES IN NOVEMBER, IT’S HARD TO TELL WHAT WILL HAPPEN BETWEEN U-S BUSINESSES AND HUAWEI. ON ONE HAND, SOME AGREEMENT COULD BE REACHED AS A PART OF TRADE NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND CHINA. HUAWEI RELIES ON U-S SUPPLIERS FOR SOME HARDWARE AS WELL AS ANDROID SUPPORT. BUT IT’S ALSO POSSIBLE PRESIDENT TRUMP WILL CUT ALL TIES WITH HUAWEI DUE TO ALLEGED NATIONAL SECURITY CONCERNS. HONESTLY, I DON’T KNOW HOW, WHEN OR IF THIS WILL END. BUT AS ALWAYS, WE’LL KEEP YOU IN THE LOOP.

THANKS FOR WATCHING THIS EPISODE OF TECH FEED. IF YOU LIKED THIS VIDEO BE SURE TO GIVE IT A THUMBS UP AND SUBSCRIBE TO OUR CHANNEL. I REALLY LOVE SEEING YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS TOPIC--SO LEAVE A COMMENT BELOW ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THIS HUAWEI BAN UPDATE. AND IF YOU HAVE ANY PREDICTIONS ABOUT WHEN IT’LL END, I WANT TO HEAR IT. SEE YOU NEXT TIME.
